Most crystal damage does not happen while you are wearing or using a stone. It happens in a drawer: pieces rubbing together, a sunny windowsill slowly bleaching the colour, or a soft stone left somewhere damp. Storing crystals well takes five minutes and keeps them looking the way they did the day they arrived.
How to store crystals: the short version
Keep softer stones wrapped and separate so harder ones do not scratch them, keep colour sensitive stones out of direct sunlight, and keep water sensitive stones somewhere dry. A lined box with compartments, or individual pouches, covers almost every situation.
What actually damages stored crystals
Four things cause nearly all storage damage. Knowing them makes every other decision obvious.
The single most common mistake is storing a soft stone next to a hard one. Quartz at Mohs 7 will happily scratch selenite at Mohs 2, so the two should never share a compartment.
Five ways to store crystals
- Soft pouches, one stone each. The simplest method. A velvet or organza pouch per stone stops scratching and is easy to label. Ideal for tumbled stones and small pieces.
- A lined box with compartments. A jewellery or display box with padded dividers keeps a collection organised and protected. Line any hard dividers with felt or tissue.
- Wrap fragile pieces individually. Points, clusters and soft stones travel and store best wrapped in acid free tissue or a small cloth, so edges and terminations do not chip.
- A display cabinet out of direct sun. If you like to see your crystals, a shelf or glass cabinet away from a sunny window gives you display without fading.
- Anti tarnish storage for silver jewellery. For crystal jewellery with silver settings, an anti tarnish pouch or strip slows tarnishing and keeps the metal bright.
How to store crystals by stone type
Use this quick reference for the stones people ask about most.
| Stone | Main risk | Best storage |
|---|---|---|
| Selenite, halite | moisture, very soft | dry, wrapped, kept apart from harder stones |
| Malachite, pyrite | moisture, dust | dry, in its own pouch, wash hands after handling rough pieces |
| Amethyst, citrine, rose quartz | colour fades in sun | out of direct sunlight, otherwise easy going |
| Fluorite, calcite, lepidolite | soft, chip easily | wrapped individually, away from harder stones |
| Quartz, agate, jasper, tiger's eye | scratching softer stones | durable, but store apart so they do not mark soft pieces |
| Crystal jewellery (silver) | tarnish, tangling | anti tarnish pouch, pieces separated |
If a stone is not listed, the rule of thumb is simple: softer or water sensitive means wrapped, dry and separate, and brightly coloured means out of strong light. For which stones tolerate water at all, see our water safe crystals guide, and for fading see which crystals fade in sunlight.
Displaying crystals without damaging them
Display and storage pull in opposite directions, so a middle path works best. Keep colour sensitive stones such as amethyst and rose quartz off sunny windowsills, sit points and clusters on a soft surface so they do not chip, and dust with a soft dry brush rather than a damp cloth on soft or water sensitive pieces. Rotating a few favourites on display while the rest rest in pouches keeps everything in good condition.
Storing and travelling with crystals
For travel, wrap each piece individually and pack them snugly so they cannot knock together. A small zipped pouch or a padded glasses case works well for a handful of stones. Keep soft and water sensitive stones away from toiletries and damp wash bags.
How to store crystal jewellery
Take bracelets and necklaces off before sleeping, showering and exercise, then store them flat and separate so chains do not tangle and beads do not rub. Silver settings last longest in an anti tarnish pouch. Full cleaning steps are in how to clean crystal jewellery safely.
Quick storage checklist
- Soft and water sensitive stones: dry, wrapped, kept separate.
- Amethyst, citrine, rose quartz: out of direct sunlight.
- Points and clusters: wrapped or on a soft surface.
- Silver jewellery: anti tarnish pouch, pieces apart.
- Dust with a soft dry brush, not water, on delicate stones.

Storage questions, answered
How should I store crystals at home?
Keep softer and water sensitive stones dry, wrapped and separate, and keep brightly coloured stones out of direct sunlight. A lined box with compartments or individual pouches covers most collections.
Do crystals fade in sunlight?
Some do. Amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, fluorite and a few others can lose colour with prolonged, strong sunlight, so store and display them away from sunny windows.
Can I store all my crystals together?
It is better not to. Harder stones such as quartz can scratch softer ones such as selenite, so keep soft pieces wrapped or in their own compartments.
How do I stop silver crystal jewellery tarnishing?
Store it dry in an anti tarnish pouch, keep pieces separate, and put jewellery on after perfume and lotion. Remove it before showering and swimming.
How often should I clean my crystals while in storage?
A quick dust now and then is usually enough. For a simple routine, see our guide on how often to clean crystals.
